Community Development Training

Training courses for development workers who give practical support to local voluntary and community groups.


The 10 fully subsidised places for each course have now been filled. If you have not already booked and are interested in attending, you can either put your name on the waiting list in case there are any cancellations or you can book one of the 5 partly subsidised places which cost £49 each.

As part of Kingston Voluntary Action's 3-year Infrastructure Support and Development Project funded by the BIG Lottery Fund, and in partnership with the National Association for Voluntary and Community Action ( NAVCA) Skills and Knowledge for Local Communities Programme (SKiLD), KVA has organised a series of 5 full day training courses designed to develop local community development skills.

 

Who Should Attend:

The training is aimed at Community Development Workers who work or volunteer for the voluntary and community sector in Kingston. The courses will be developed and promoted through KVA's Community Development Network.

 

Overview:

The training will take place over 5 Thursdays between August 2010 to March 2011 at the Richard Mayo Centre, United Reformed Church in central Kingston. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

 

5 August 2010 – Being a Development Worker

 
Introductory course for people who are new to development work, or revisiting the job after a while. It will define the community and development work, identify skills required for working in the community, help evaluate personal skills, teach effective communication with groups and organisations, and recommend support and resources available to development workers.

 Being a Development Worker participants receive their certificates

16 September 2010 – Tools for Development Work

 
For people who have been working in the community for a while and want some new ideas and techniques. The course will introduce practical tools about common issues and creative techniques to use with the groups for analysis, planning, prioritising and decision making.

 

11 November 2010 – Diversity: Making it Real

 
The course will develop the knowledge and skills needed to understand diversity and tackle inequality when working in the community, introduce the participants to UK legislation on diversity and look at the similarities and differences between equal opportunities and diversity.

 

13 January 2011 – Facilitation Skills

 
This course will be aimed at those who facilitate workshops, meetings and consultation events.
It will explore the theory and practice of good facilitation.

 

17 March 2011 – From Development Worker to Manager

 

Opportunity for those who are new to managing others to explore management issues including balancing life and work, assertiveness, managing conflict, teams and being part of a team and setting goals for your future.

 

Certification:

Each participant will receive a NAVCA SKiLD Programme Certificate of Attendance.
